Queen Bee "Chloe"
by Amy Fredrickson

Hello There,

I just wanted to say that I was very delighted to come across your web sight.

I too am a pug LOVER!  I remember coming home from school one day and there in our living room was this very ugly, black, smooshed nose, skinny something-or-other.  Ukie, our first pug.  My mom found an ad in the paper and looked into it and when she went to go see the dog with my father, they fell in love.  Ukie was six months old he had been the runt of the litter and he had grown up in a trailer with people who worked all day long so he was alone alot.  He was very skinny and had mange and he wasn't used to people so he was kind of skittish especially with us kids.

Well Ukie got lots of love and attention from us, and after all of the dip treatments to get rid of the mange my parents lovingly called him "the dog with the $500 dollar coat".  He soon warmed up to all of us and became the king of the house.  Oh, and he put on a little or a little more than a little weight too. If you have had pugs, you know they have great personality and he had the best.  He knew what made every member of our house happy and he had his special way with all of us.

He was always at my mom's heels in the kitchen, following her around all day long keeping her company and he always came and visted and played tug with my dad when he came home from work, he would play tuff with my brother and sit on my sisters feet while she studied or keep her company when she was blue and he would have this marvelous way of finding his way into my bed early each morning when my parents got up and he would snuggle up under my chin until he fell asleep where at that point he would become "Mr. Bedhog" and nearly push me out.

Also he loved to take turns laying on our tummies while we watched TV, he was just the best and we loved him with all of our hearts.  You can even spot him in our professional family protrait we had taken one year.

Unfortunately, Ukie passed away on Aug. 18, 1997.  That was the day we were supposed to celebrate my birthday because I was returning to college before the 20th my real birthday.  My mom, sister and I had just returned from a shopping trip out of town and when we drove up, we could see that both my father and brother were really upset.  We immediately thought something terrible had happened to one of our family members or something and we were very sad to find out that just that did happen.  he had died that morning, from what we do not know.

Our other dog, Jesse (a german shepard, lab mix) was okay so we don't think he ate anything so we assumed that he must have had a seizure or a heart attack or something.  My brother found him and it was very hard because he thought it was his fault because he didn't check on Ukie sooner, he had been decorating as a surprise for a birthday party my family was going to have for me. My dad and brother burried him out my the pond in our backyard, one of his favorite spots. We were all very upset and it hurt a lot because he was such an important part of our family. Even now, years later my sister and I especially can look at an old picture and it will make us misty-eyed.

Going away to school, I thought about my family alot and how hard and lonely it must be without Ukie... especially for my mother, they did a lot of stuff together while by brother and sister were at school.  I knew that no one thought we could get another pug because no other dog could ever take Ukie's place... he was one of a kind; but I knew in my heart that something was needed to take away that empty space in our home and hearts.  I immediately started looking in the paper for ads.

Pugs are really hard to come by in Nevada where we are from, so it wasn't until four months later I found an ad: "Female Black Chinese Pug Puppy- $600!"  The dog was purebred with papers and we aren't into the dog because it is purebred or anything, we are into them for their personality so $600 dollars seemed like a lot of money for me a college student with a part time job to pay, but I desperately felt we needed this dog.  I decided to give the lady a call and go see the puppy.  She was SOOOOOOO CUTE! She was only three weeks old and so tiny, I picked her up and she looked into my eyes and licked my cheek and I fell in love.

Right then and there I knew I would do whatever it took to get this dog.  I asked the lady if i could make payments and she agreed I also asked her if she would hold her until January 21, my mom's birthday I wanted her to be a surprise and she agreed.  I was so excited, I had to tell my sister right away and she was so excited too that I was afraid she couldn't keep the secret.  Well I was right, the next day my Dad called and asked me about this dog I was planning on getting.  I told him all about her and I guess he got sold too because he offered to pay for her I told him she was only $400 because I was afraid he might change his mind if she was $600, but $200 was a lot easier for me to get together than $600 I was so relieved.

I visited our soon to be pug all the time, she grew quickly and was such a ball of energy, I was so in love.  Her personality is all her own, she is smart and knows just how to get to you too, like Ukie did.  The day came to take her home and I got her ready to go meet her "new" family.  they lived about forty-five miles away so I decided to stop by Pet Smart and get her some new toys; a puppy traing kit, shampoo, a brush, a collar, a tag, a harness ( she was too little for a leash), some food, toys, treats and a new blanket.  I had given her a blanket a while back for her to get used to so that she had something stable that she felt comfortable with when I took her away so she slept in that on the way home.

When I got home, everyone knew except mom, my sister rushed out and burst into tears, I let her carry her in.  My dad and brother were waiting.  I walked in first like nothing was going on. My mom was sitting on the couch watching a movie with my dad.  I said "Happy Birthday" and my sister came from behind me and dumped a squirmming bundle of joy into her lap.  She instantly started crying "saying what is this!" She was so happy, we were all very, very happy.

Chloe is now a year old and she has her own special place in our hearts she is definately the "Queen Bee"  We all love her dearly. She is usually the first to greet me whenever I come home to visit. She is so cute!

Pugs are so special I think they are all about personality.  A pug lover sees that...most other people don't understand fully how great they are and they are missing out.  You get past that "they're so ugly they're cute" phase and just plain love them, slobber, snorts, farts and all
